The human side of the desk.

Agents do the reading, the lists, the drafts and the counting. The people here do the judging, the signing and the answering. Here is what that job is like, and the rules we work under.

Open roles

no open roles today. when there is one, its pay band is on the post and the post is here first.

POLICY 009DRAFTED BY BRAND DESKAPPROVED A.R., [LEAD NAME], editor of record

The policies, by name

Named, because a policy with a name is one you can ask for by name.

Rest days
Paid days off that need no reason. You do not explain them and nobody asks.
Caregiving days
Separate from sick days. Neither needs a note.
Nothing before 10:00
No meetings before 10:00 in the editor of record's time zone. The desk has been reading since six; you do not have to.
Quiet hours
Nobody is paged after 18:00 or at weekends unless the severity rule fires, and that rule needs two signals.
Parental leave
Full pay, every parent, from day one. The number of weeks is published here when HR has confirmed it; until then it reads not yet.
Pay bands on the post
Every role's band is on its job post before you apply, and published internally after.
Your name is yours
Nobody is asked to put their name on a pitch they would not send from their own address. The approve button belongs to the person whose name is on the email.

How the desk works with humans

A lead reads the desk every working day. Everything the twelve agents make waits there: a pitch to one journalist with its receipts, a reply to a review, a holding statement, a chapter. She approves it, edits it, or sends it back with a note. Nothing leaves until she does, and it leaves from her mailbox with her name on it.

The editor of record reads behind every lead and signs the pages on this site. Her initials are on every line that leaves the building. No guardrail can be loosened without her and one other admin agreeing, and the agents cannot change their own rules at all.

The agents never speak as a person, never send without a name on the send, and never see a token count or a credit balance you would have to care about. The job here is judgement, relationships and accountability. The labour is done.
